I'm sorry, but speaking as a business owner myself, Paul does not know how to properly deal with his employees. Who his employees vote for is none of his business, nor should he care even if he does know. Such a vindictive attitude towards those that contribute their time and effort to one's business is indicative of someone that is destined to be much less successful than they might otherwise be. The number one rule is that you always treat your employees and customers with respect. You may not agree with them, but you should always be the better person and be completely above personal issues like politics.

Yup. I was talking with the owner of a small restaurant that I eat at frequently. He told me in no uncertain terms that if Obama enacts nationalized health-care and/or raises taxes he will have to close his doors. He will no longer be able to make payroll.

As it is his restaurant is a very popular one in Deland, FL - a very steady flow and many regular customers (including myself). His story tells me just how close to the edge we as a nation have been running financially. It's not likely to get any better now that the Democrats have control.

Obama is planning on raising Employment Tax (SS and Medicare) for all workers making over 90K. He calls this a "contribution..not a tax." but whatever he wants to call it, it is an increased expense. I don't know how he gets away with the 250K comment by calling a tax a contribution but I guess you can do that when you control the media.

I don't understand the reaction. No company will make less operating profit under Obama's plan. Companies with operating profits greater than 250k will see higher income taxes and lower net income, but the idea that it will lower employment is nonsense. If anything, it will give people higher disposable income and they will buy more and increase operating and net income.

As small business owners, we were pleased to see Charlie Rangel's comments recently in regard to lowering top corp. rate. We'd like to see a distinction between passive income and active income. My father, who lived through the Great Depression, always said he didn't mind paying taxes as long as he was earning money. I feel the same way.

I suspect multi-trillion dollar deficits will cost us a lot more in affluence than an extra 5-10% on Capital Gains. I urge other small business owners to ask themselves: are we better off now than we were 8 years ago? I'm certainly not.

We were all better off, though, when we could depend on the Democrats to promote fairness and the Republicans to promote economic sanity.

Frankly I don't understand these arguments. If the small business is a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership or S Corp, there would have to be a $250,000 profit (including owner's salary/draw) before taxes go up. I don't know any small businessmen who makes that kind of profit. We tend to reinvest money into our companies. But if an owner is stuck with a huge profit, then he/she doesn't really comprehend and should spend time with a competent CPA to do some tax planning.

If we pay more in taxes, including a significant increase in payroll taxes , then it will become increasingly more difficult to accumulate a cash reserve from profits. Without a significant cash reserve, how can a small business owner afford to keep paying employees through difficult times (like now). I see Pauls point. If I begin to run low on cash and have had to send more to the government, then I may have to cut expenses including laying off some employees. If I do, then they can go get that same cash after it has been filtered through government and sent to the local unemploymnent office. I would rather keep the cash and pay those who are the best qualified to continue working in our business. Plain and simple: taxes are an expense for business. They are virtually like having a partner taking a percentage of your profits. I don't need a partner who continues to take more from me and do less for our business.

During the debates Obama said you will not pay any higher taxes than you did under Reagan. The serpents tongue strikes again. I like this line because, he gets to compare himself to Reagan and he also gets to raise taxes because currently, taxes are lower than they were under Reagan for all income levels. Regarding the 250k threshold, I hope everyone is not so foolish to believe that you will not pay any higher taxes. Maybe "Income" tax will not increase, but there are plenty of ways they are going to raise revenue. There is already talk of taxing all profits from S Corps for Social Security for service professionals. Don't think you qualify? Here's a glimpse of who are hit: accountants, lawyers, medicine, architects, engineers, and the big catchall net of consultants. Another way to think about it, if we have such a large deficit now, how are they going to pay for all the freebies Obama promised? Remember, next year's deficit is forecast to be near $1 Tril at the current rate. I am glad everyone is comfortable assuming the rich will continue to carry the load. Its time to wake up people. This is priceless. Why would Paul need to fire someone if he is making $250,000 in PROFIT? The fear and mis-information is unbelievable. 250K in profit for any small business is pretty rare as owners usually re-invest into their business. If you happen to be "cursed" with too much profit, a good accountant can help you get around the system.

After talking to our accountant he cleared up the worry for us that we would fall into that category. I think the tax will be based on your adjusted gross income after all expenses, and we have alot, have been subtracted. I don't know why Obama didn't make that clearer during his speaches. I think many people are really more concerned with the Obama plan to take money from some Americans and "gift" it directly to other Americans in the form of a check. I have no problem paying taxes to cover the expenses of the government, but I have a major problem with that money going directly to someone else. That money represents time I spent working that I could have spent with my children, or reading a book. I guess it's a big assumption that people know how taxes work. We have a marginal tax bracket. That means that if you made $249,999 of profit, versus 250,001 of profit, you'd pay a higher amount (let's say 10 cents) on the 2 additional dollars you netted, and not a penny more on the first $249,999. The comment someone made about keeping their business under $250k is hillarious. You run with that business plan buddy... it's a winner...haha.

The fact is that we have a very expensive government with the war in Iraq eating away at us and now the big bailout plans. We have to pay for that somehow. So you can take a higher tax bill on your PROFIT or you can reinvest that money in your business and grow it instead. If you're at or over $250k, why not hire another employee? That will push down your profit and give your business more resources. Part (only a part) of our economic problems are that we stopped investing in infrastructure of companies and of the country and started just pulling the cash out. It makes sense to incentivize growth over profit. You have choices, so talk to a CPA and make some don't panic.

Why else would business owners fear making more money? Yeah, I'm sure businesses are afraid of 10 cents. We Americans work and sweat for the things we own or want. When we are paid for our effort, we think it is our money. That is wrong. The government takes from our money before we ever see it. Payroll deductions of all sorts going to the government can total 25% or higher of what we have earned.

What has the government done for us to merit 25% of our pay? What right does the government have at all to confiscate our private property (i.e. our money)?

Well, there are several things that we have agreed to permit local, state and the federal governments to do for us. We like having the security of a local police force and a standing federal army for our protection. We like having paved roads to drive on and we like to see potholes filled. We like having a court system where we can sue the crap out of those dastardly evil people who have wronged us. We like getting a "free" education all the way through high school. And we like countless other services provided by our tax dollars.

What we don't like are people we perceive to be welfare loafers, those people that the government generously doles out our money to for doing nothing in return. We don't like living in Topeka and paying for an unnecessary nudist park in San Francisco. We positively can't stand paying medical services costs for people who have entered our country illegally. We think entitlement programs are out of control and we have grown tired of footing the bill for someone who refuses to help themselves.

The above scenario describes how a lot of individuals in our country feel. But what's that got to do with businesses? It has everything to do with businesses because businesses are owned by individuals.

Who makes up a sole-proprietorship? A partnership? A Corporation? It is people. And it is people that have become fed up with government intrusion into their lives and government hands snaking deeper into their pocketbooks.

When will individuals and businesses in this country finally stand up and say Enough! Enough! Enough!

My Dad grew up on a farm during the depression and was a farmer through the 70's and 80's and I heard him say repeatedly (the last few years before he retired) "Boy, I wish I could pay taxes".

Firing an employee for his or her political beliefs is flat out unethical. The small business owner quoted in this article seems to take for granted the privilege he has to live in a country that has awarded him the opportunity to operate a successful small business. I'm sure he would say he "loves this country" whole-heartedly if asked, but seems to care not about the first amendment rights of those equal citizens that hold views conflicting with his own.

Forget getting fired, I can't believe someone would want to work for an individual that runs their business in this manner.

I am hopeful and positive for the future of our country and the economy as I am for my own business. We have had a steady growth for three years, including this year despite the downturn. I did not vote for Obama, but I am also hopeful and confident that he will be the leader that we all want him to be.

My question is where is my bailout assistance. My business could really turn the corner and thrive with a relatively small cash injection of $50,000 - $150,000, support mutiple families who are employed with the business, continue to prosper and pay more taxes. Why do the big boys get all the attention when us small business owners, who are always touted as the backbone of the US economy, could use a shot in the arm too.

I think Obama and the Treasury should consider some increases and liberal requirements for small business assistance too.

I have retail stores and income in excess of $250K. My immediate thought was to eliminate 1 to 2 positions at each store after the election. I will still do this but will wait until after Obama takes office. I am not going to wait until the tax bill arrives though. Business owners need to be proactive in this situation and not reactive. As for the employees let go, the "wealth will be spread", just coming to them in a different kind of check with someone's signature on it other than mine.

The Over $250,000 plan is not the money you take in but the money you make after all expenses are paid including your employees and including yourself. And that is all expenses. And the proposed increase for profit over $250,000 is just three per cent more. So if I made a profit of $300,000, I would pay $1500 more in tax. So let me think...I made in profit $50,000 more so I pay $1500 more. Seems ok with me. But with not all the knuckle-heads.

The "no tax increase" folks fail to realize one true fact: it didn't matter whether Obama or McCain won the election. Seriously, as an investigative reporter that's the best email quote for a civil debate about Obama's tax plan that you could muster up? Clearly Paul's comment would only insight ridiculous accusations about how nuts Republicans are...and yes, Paul's position is extreme. But the fact remains, punishing success is not a great idea when we need small business to invest...Republican's and Democrats alike want prosperity (although I wonder sometimes), we have very different ideas of how to get there.

If you think taxing a gold medalist wouldn't change the outcome of who gets there, then you need a lesson in economics. If it makes you feel more socially moral to pay more taxes, then you need to know that creating wealth does more for the poor than spreading it...again another econ 101 lesson is needed. A good economy requires rich people, w/o them we all starve.

And don't think I'm happy with corporate corruption, I'm not, and we all want something done about it. I'm worried about the Dentist down the street that stops spending his money around town, or the local contractor that no longer hires out the things he doesn't want to do...Obama's tax plan will impact us all, and not in the best way...unless you don't work for anything anyway...then you'll love him and be rewarded for doing nothing...and keep doing nothing for the rest of your life. How will perpetuating poverty help our country?

Two years ago I bought a small ranch in Hermosillo Mexico. The day after the election I fired all of my american employees and began moving my trucks and breeder livestock into mexico and I will run them there with mexican drivers and semi retire and live there for the next four years with most of my living money transfered to Banomex Banks.
I may return in four years if there is an Amaerica to come home to, but I would rather pile my money up and set it on fire before I see barry get his hands on it.

I actually worked in a company that had an owner named Paul who fancied himself as becoming a Republican politician and was actually donating money to the GOP while his business was failing.

It was clear that Obama was going to win the presidency months ago and that the GOP was going to take a drubbing. Yet he persisted in supporting the GOP and even tried to proselytize associates with the Republican conservative message during sales meetings.

If he ever runs for office, I will help his opponent. I liked Paul, but he ran a awful business with marginal benefits and three holidays a year. He fired 1 to 2 people every week. He also lacked college.

To many failed businessmen like Paul end up with political appointments in the GOP. In his case he will have to wait at least four years to get one of those jobs.

After I was laid off and got unemployment, I went to work for the Obama campaign as a volunteer and helped him win in the Florida I4 corridor. There were other volunteers that were fed up with the GOP that were supporting Obama. Many had been laid off.

So thank you, Paul. You helped me get directly involved in politics for the first time in my life and be a part of an effort that resulted in a huge Democratic victory.

Bush redistributed the wealth by giving tax cuts to the rich and they called it a "stimulus package". The rich got richer and the rest got poorer. People make cutbacks and our industry was one of the first to feel the pinch. Obama understands that the middle class is the heart of this country and the backbone of the economy. He is going to give tax cuts to the middle class and to small business and that will help stimulate the economy. And I'm sorry, but if you Net over $250,000. you aren't middle class and you aren't a small business.

I would be very happy to pay the taxes on all of the money my business DIDN'T MAKE under George W. Bush. Even at the height of our business, when I had 25 employees, I never netted anything close to $250,000. But if I did, what is a 3% increase?

If "Paul" only has 2 employees then I don't understand how he could possibly Net more than $250,000. in profit. And who is going to do the extra work of the fired employee? Paul? Then guess what. I read with interest the comments about all I get free from the government. Let's see if I can put that in perspective.
I work two jobs. One for a large company, the other is my own retail company. I work the first so I can support the second. We have yet to make 250,000 in gross profit and this ecomony isn't helping, but we have a plan and are actually making it work. Even so, without careful budgeting for what we can afford, I can barely afford to keep everyone employed. So if I am going to incur more expenses with some of the proposals to provide more insurance benefits, I will have to let someone go, and I cannot survive with less people. If I get just one more cost piled on, I too will close. my accountant and I are going to review the profit ratio to the input at year's end. I employ 8, so they will be added to the unemployment line. Currently all have supplemental insurance from another source. I will no longer buy from my suppliers, pay rent to my landlord, pay utilites, phone bills, advertising, freight, computer access fees, janitorial supplies. I am not a huge company but I spend about 300,000 yearly in my community. That will be gone. So that leaves my other job. I will then not be investing the amount I make there into this company which leave me free to pay more taxes to help those who need it-- btu what about my employees? Do you see where I am going? My employees needed it, the community needed it. Now it is diluted in a huge pot, so that it is spread how? I currently pay property tax, school tax,community college tax, ad valorem tax, utilty use tax, employment tax, social security tax, sales tax, street and wheel tax, toll tax, city tax, garbage collection tax, fuel taxes, tax on freight in and out, commercial utility rates to subsidize residential rates, commercial phone rates to subsidize residential rates. So I quit paying into those for?? what was thereason?? Making it harder on the small business owner does not fix anything. However, it will give me time back -- no second job for me! But the trickle down is painful.

If Paul fires one employee, the immediate effect would be that his PROFIT would actually go up , for the same revenue he brings and he would need to pay more tax even under the current rates.

People really do not seem to understand what gets taxed - it's the PROFIT, stupid.
I refuse to believe many of these people make the MILLIONS in sales/revenue that would work out to 250 k in profit.
And I refuse to believe they would have to have to close down because they would have to pay just $3 more for than they would have to now, for every $100 profit, which probably means about $2000 additional revenue, ABOVE the 250k profit limit.
It is more likely they small businesses would close down if their lower-middle class customers do not get adequate tax relief that would encourage them to buy their goods/services.

I like the comment about the restraunt owner who will shut down if taxes go up. I have to wonder if that was a story made for a comments section. The person who posted it obviously knows little about small business.

I looked at an example of someone who was netting 200,000 vs someone who is netting 250,000 post proposed increase. The person making 250 will still keep $37,000 more than the person making $200,000. So we are now to believe that people will deliberately go out of business or won't be incentivized to earn more and would prefer to keep $37,000 less in order to avoid any additional taxes.

I've been a small businessman since 1982. I have been through numerous booms and busts. Ask any small business person their preference ; enough profits that you can enter the top 10% of income earners or work 100 hours a week and lose everything because of 8 year of economic policy that has ended up causing a record amount of small business bankruptcies.

America is a County that has always rewarded it's entrepreneurs. It's also a country where failure is an option and one can try over again. The entry barriers for small businesspeople elsewhere are significantly higher.

If we are making good profits then we should be happy to pay the taxes to keep our country afloat. If the country doesn't make it, neither does the small business. Talk to some businesspeople that have filed for bankruptcy this year. Ask them their preference on taxes.

As a newly established small business owner, my partner and I have looked at the increased costs associated with the new "proposals" under the Obama plan. As pointed out in previous posts it is not just about higher taxes on those making over $250k. Right now it is extremely difficult to get approved for any loans. Right now we have a very lucrative incentive to invest our money in equipment we need while realizing an immediate depreciation. The "contribution" of SS and Medicare obligations will almost triple for our employees. If capital gains increases like he would prefer that's another issue for us. Oh yeah, and if he insists on all employees be insured there's more expense. These impact us even though we don't have over $250k.
So, we all know the math. When businesses incur expenses they pass them on to the customer. If you have a product that people don't need the probability will be that sales for those items will significantly decreese as people hang onto more of their money. I don't mind paying taxes but enough is enough already. Thank you James for your comments above. I fully support your position. I am an optimist and will continue to do my best, but I am also a realist and can see the raising cost of doing business and how that impacts the bottom line.

wow. I work for a public accounting firm and do tax returns for small businesses and individuals. First of all, everyone is acting like all "small businesses" are the same. they are not. your tax situation first and foremost will depend on what type of entity you are. a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a S corp, a C corp are all treated differently. Secondly, I think the only way people are really going to understand how Obama's plan will affect their taxes is to see how it is the first year. There are going to be credits and other incentives for the small business owner that may offset any increase in taxes and sad to say from reading these posts apparently lots of people don't understand how taxes work. The idea that when you get to $250,000.01 your tax rate is higher for the whole amount is ridiculous. The idea that somehow one person who makes over $250,000 is going to be "writing a check" to another individual and "sharing the wealth" is ridiculous. If you people are really small business owners check with your accountants before you freak out. I tell my clients all the time the bad news is... you owe more taxes.... the good news is that means you made alot of money. The tax rate for money over $250,000 is set to increase 3%. If my choices are: make over $250,000 and pay an additional 3% in taxes on everything over that amount and not make over $250,000 i'm going to pick making over $250,000. remember if you can keep 64% of every dollar over $250,000 it's still what most of us would choose to do.

As far as some type of national medical coverage for the unisured- PLEASE bring it on. I pay an average of $550 per month for medical insurance for my employees and contribute to their HSA's as well. I am a 39 year-old disabled vet. I was injured in Desert Storm. I suffer from PTSD and many other illnesses and injuries that the VA sytem refuses to acknowledge that I received during combat. I got out of the military in '93 and I have been fighting them ever since to be compensated for my illnesses and injuries. I can't hold down a job because of my medical problems. So I struggle trying to provide for my family. I pay $560 a month for medical insurance for my kids. I am just one guy, but there are a lot of other guys out there with the same situation or worse. I was in the VA Hospital for the last 8 1/2 months recovering from another bout with Gulf War Syndrome related illnesses. While I was there I got to see first hand what President Bush's progress in Iraq looks like. You want to see go to your local VA Hospital and look at all the young kids 18 - 26 years old sitting in there maimed, disabled, or reduced to nothing more than a vegetable. Then you look at their mothers, wives, children, loved ones and other relatives and ask them how they like the "progress" that their loved one was a part of. Now the government will have to take care of them or what you ignorrant uninformed people call a handout. That's if the government want to acknowledge their injuries. Believe me there a lot of kids in there that are getting what they deserve and their families are suffering because of it. Change has come. Time to change the way the current administration reviews veteran compensation claims. So, take your handout and shove it..... We just want to be acknowledged and compensated for our service and to be able to take care of our families. So, if that means you have to pay a little higher taxes then so be it suck it up and drive on. I payed the price of putting my life on the line so you could continue to enjoy the freedom of owning and growing your business here in the good ol' USA. Stop wining and pay your part.

Here's some food for thought. During the 1950's and 60's, one of the most successful economic periods in our country's history, the income tax on the top tax bracket was between 70 and 90%.
This is a fact, look it up.
I think there's a bunch of very rich people out there that need to shut up already with their whining about higher taxes under Obama. After all, historically, they're making out like bandits.
I think it's also worth noting that the last time high income tax brackets and capital gains taxes were this low was in the 1920's, in the years immediately preceeding the Great Depression.

I don't quite understand the fear of tax increases by businesses who rake in profits of over $250k. Tax increases aren't going to affect the business, it's going to affect the business owners' personal income. If they absolutely have to keep their income over $250k per year, then maybe they need to adjust their lavish lifestyle and tighten their belt a little, not fire employees.

Hell, if they just hired another employee(s) so that their taxable profits dipped under the $250k mark, they'd pay less taxes and would be helping provide jobs for more people that need them.

Most small businesses in America (like mine) don't make that much in profits and shouldn't see tax increases under Obama's plan. Chances are though, we're all going to end up paying for this bad economy somehow - regardless of who won the election. The wealthy will just have to cut back, while the rest of us will have to find a way to survive.

I hear people complain about Obama wanting to "spread the wealth" by increasing taxes on the rich - a similar plan used by Clinton back in the early/mid 90's when he was helping the economy bounce back from the first Bush. Yet the argument against tax increases for the rich involves the rich getting richer and providing more opportunities for the poor - in essence, another form of spreading the wealth really, just indirectly. That's a system that has been in place for the past 8 years, and had it been working, it wouldn't have led us to this point.

Yes, the nation needs to have wealthy people for the "economic machine" to work. But when the income gap between the wealthy and the average person becomes so huge, it is not healthy. The rich have continued to get richer in our society regardless of tax increases or tax breaks. The average income for the rest of us has not increased at the same relative rate, at least from reports that I've seen. What's the income ratio of the average CEO and employee? Take a look at that ratio and see how it's changed the past two decades.

We got to where we are because of greed at every level. How do you fix that problem in a capitalist society? Is it even possible?

I am a CPA and most of what I've read here borders on stupidity. Those who make business decisions in order to avoid income taxes more likely than not, costing themselves disposable income. Some buy unneeded assets in order to take advantage of the write-offs. They are cutting their noses off to spite their face. Spending $1 to save $.30 in taxes results in you losing $.60 of possibly needed cash flow.

To fire someone because of their political beliefs would cost the employer more in the end than keeping them as an employee, if they are a productive individual. Employees should be making their employers money, and if they aren’t, then they should be terminated. If that position is needed, then the time and productivity lost training a replacement would be very costly. Employees should make you money. Getting rid of them because you might be paying higher taxes is not a very sound argument.

To Sam of Arizona, you couldn’t be further from the truth when you said that if you made over $250,000 you’d be taxed more on the entire amount. Our income is taxed at marginal rates. You pay one rate on the income that falls into that marginal tax bracket. Bumping into the next bracket because of your income does not affect the rate paid in the lower brackets.

This country has experienced much higher tax brackets in the past and the economy and standard of living grew for everyone. Before Reagan, the top bracket was 70% which was too high. He cut the rates for everyone, but mostly for the very rich. They have benefited the most in the last 28 years. Bush cut the rates in 2001 promising to return to the taxpayers the budget surpluses. What no one talks about was the fact that the budget surpluses were from excess social security collections and not income tax. So he cut income taxes but continued to raise social security taxes on the working stiffs.

1) If you are making more than 250K+, in profit, after expenses and your own salary(whatever you take as your pay), you shouldn't be complaining about having to pay taxes, whatever they are.
2) Taxes are not for 'the other guy', they should be fair to everyone. The Bush tax program gave businesses and higher scale companies tax breaks on the premise that the companies could then afford to hire more employees. The Reality? The tax breaks were taken and very few employees hired. Many businesses saw they could maintain a higher net profit due to these lower taxes and still did not hire more workers and further reduced the minimal benefits employees did have. I know, I worked for one. All the while, keeping more money in their pockets (they loved the Bush tax cut & said so!!) yet kept letting people go because the next one worked for 50 cents an hour less than the one they just let go. Pretended to be all anti-immigration..more american than anyone else (nevermind that all of us except native americans and african americans were immigrants, who came here because they wanted to)but wanted very badly to hire 'mexicans, because they will work more hours for less per hour'. Funny, when one mexican employee realized this was what was being done, he quit in digust, taking 2 friends with him! Firing a worker because of the way he voted does not
sound like the U.S. where I grew up. Just think about it.
The President-elect has not spoken of anything specific since the election. Prior to that, he consistently said that taxes would only be raised if the family or business earned more than $250,000 after all the deductions were taken out.

If the man has only two employees, one of whom will be ousted because of his voting record, it is difficult for me to believe this business is making over $250,000/year. Businesses in the U.S. have so many loopholes to avoid paying the IRS, owners of the businesses also have many deductions that are not accessible to the average worker.

I suggest that he find a new CPA to advise him because obviously he is not aware of the situation. The man has not even been inaugurated yet but in this "small" businessman's mind, he believes in all the negativism he hears. I wonder why?

As one person posted, talk with your accountant (which you should do regularly anyway), or as others suggest, educate yourself on what to really expect. A progressive tax (the more you make the more you pay) has been around since Teddy Roosevelt (R). On what basis do people feel this is incorrect, and how does this equate to a hand-out to people who you think don’t want to work? Clinton (D) reformed welfare, but please, taxes are needed to pay for services, infrastructure, and the wonderful Iraq war you’ve supported.

If you have a combined personal income of $250K or more, or you own a company that is clearing a profit of $250K or more, rejoice because that means you are at least in the top 5% of the population--even after taxes.

Here is another economic point of interest. In areas where there is a mandatory “living” wage (not minimum, but living wage), the economy and businesses are actually doing better. Mull on that a bit, and maybe a “trickle-up” economy with Obama’s tax plan will begin to make sense to you.

I had planned to hire two full time employees, however I am now only looking at hiring one part time employee. I lived in England for 2 years and worked and paid taxes (as an American citizen). Anyone that believes that 250K threshold is naieve or just ignorant. I made the equiv. of $21,000 in 1993. Here are the taxes I paid:

1. Income 15% flat rate no deductions no write off period.
2. National health Services (SS) 8% flat
3. VAT (National sales tax) 17.5%
4. Council tax (like property tax) $150 per month
5. Tax on Gasoline $70-100 month.
6. I paid $70 per month to heat two rooms of our flat about 350 Square feet.

I was in the bottom tax bracket in the UK and I paid around 40-45%. We Americans are fairly gullible and stupid. There is not enough money to take from the rich to pay for Health care and entitlement spending.

In the past Obama has voted to increase federal taxes on people making less than $45,000. Wake up!

'Middle class' don't have money to spend on products and services. Most of us barely have enough to cover the necessities. Far too many don't have that.

Where are all those families losing their homes going? How many who did have the money to pay the mortgage won't, because they lost their jobs? The Republicans hocked our future with buy-now-pay-later federal deficit. Now, we have to go further in debt to build an economy that will pay us enough to have taxable income to make the payments.

Hopefully, it'll be soon enough to prevent vast numbers of small businesses from failing, because we don't have the money to buy anything from them. The Obama plan includes SBA loans and hiring incentives for small businesses. I'm not hopeful. Far, far too many prefer to get in the way and then complain things are getting worse than get to work on the fix. Who's a slacker?

I just do NOT understand how this has gotten so blown out of proportion. What is the big deal??

First off, our country has ALWAYS had a graduated income tax system and any small business owner worth his salt has always looked for ways to keep "profits" down so as to not move up in tax brackets by bringing home too much profit. Firing an employee won't bring your profits down. If you are over 250K in taxable income, firing an employee will reduce your deductible expenses, thereby causing an INCREASE your profit. The way to keep from paying taxes is to increase expenses by investing in the business, etc.

Secondly, aren't we talking about personal income taxes here? My husband and I have been self-employed for about 20 years as sole proprietors and then as an S Corp. It takes a gross profit in the company of over $700K for us to get a personal income of $200K and we are in a VERY low overhead business. In previous businesses, we would have had to gross a lot more than that to have PERSONAL income of $250K.

Hire a good CPA and no matter what the government does, you won't pay more taxes. End of story.

As a small business owner I hear and feel the impulse of my clients. All our clients want low prices, high quality, and minimum taxes (local, state, fed, or international).

I donate over 10% of my income to charities. I want to decide whom I give my money to not the Government (Joe Biden donated approx $3000 in 5 years not sure about Obama since he released very little personal information records). Seems to me these are not very generous people by nature with their own money.

The Government does not have to compete therefore they create a work ethic of, "I will receive income regardless of how productive I am". So, why should I give them more money?

This past 2 years with the increase of hydocarbons (until very recently) our profit margins went down so we tightened our belts and have done more with less. The Government must learn to do more with less like all average Americans have done the past few years.

Currently, we have the 2nd higest corporate taxes in the world. If this new administration is not careful some large corps will move their headquarters, operations, and staff to more tax friendly countries. This is the reason why most wealthy Russians are moving to the UK (they are not paying income taxes but spending lots. Kinda of spreading the wealth on their own terms)! Plus, London is expected to surpass New York as the worlds financial capital by 2015.

Inreases of taxes in any way, shape, or form is not good for our Government now. They have looted Social Security Accounts over many years and several administrations. The day they fix Social Security is the day I will listen with trust that they can manage an increase in any taxes. Until then the ride will become rougher for all hard working tax paying Americans so buckle up and start stuffing your mattress.

Just like, when sales taxes increases we just charge our clients the increase so we will also pass all tax increses to our clients. SO, who really will be paying for higher taxes. If you have not yet figured it out, it will be the 95% (I will believe it when I see it) of Americans who have been promised tax cuts.

We have a friend (Obama supporter) in the same business whose bisiness broke $300,000 last year, owns a house and has done everything "right". They now have two kids and wanted to put an extra bedroom on the house since the kid (a boy and girl) are getting too old to share a bedroom. They have perfect credit and could not get a construction loan. I would read a bit more about Obama's tax proposals before I went off the deep end, by the way: change.gov Our friends would have had a tax write-off had they gotten that loan. As a small business owner I can tell you that if your business is taxed to the point where you have to raise prices just to be able to make any money, eventually you will price yourself out of the marketplace. The costs of healthcare and other employee benefits are already very high. I'd rather have lower taxes, charge a competitive price for my product, and be able to pay very competitive salaries to my staff so they can better their quality of life. Giving it to a government that is not focused on controlling costs and pork initiatives seems like wasting money to me.

I'd rather spend the money locally on things I know we locally need and I can see direct benefits from, than send Washington the money to waste on a project that locally doesn't affect us. Wow. I love the way the Republicans are now blaming union employees for the failure of the auto industry. You call Democrats socialists but want to deny people the right to band together against a huge money making corporation. When a CEO is getting paid MILLIONS of dollars for flying around in private jets to glad hand and basically be a PR rep, you defend his right to earn whatever he can get. Yet when a worker is promised by that same company that he will get a pension if he sticks with the company for his entire working life, you blame the failure of the company on the loyal employee. Never mind that the company has produced low quality faulty products for the past 30 years. Never mind that the company mismanaged the profit it made for 60 years. Never mind that the company actively suppressed better technology for the past 30 years. It's ALL because of those socialist UNIONS.
Look back in history just 60 years, folks. The government had to force companies to protect the health of employees because the companies didn't care if they killed people. Companies only pay good wages because a minimum is set by the government and competition forced the companies to pay higher than the minimum.
I was amused by the governor of Tennessee as he bragged about getting a Honda plant because the employees, without a union, get lower pay and poorer quality health care. Now THAT's something to be really proud of!
Unions are controlled by the union members. Those people as a collective need to go to the big three and BARGAIN. Has the CEO cut his wage or health care or pension? I'd bet, "no." Looks like a bargaining point. Unions are not socialist, they function on the same capitalist ideals you claim to support. Supply and demand.
The larger issue that you aren't seeing is the GLOBAL market, people. Consider this. The desire for greater profit drives a company to move the plant to a third world economy. Those people now begin earning a very modest income and go from existence farming to consumers of the products they are helping to make. The world does not have enough wealth or resources to bring all third world economies up to the level that you and I enjoy. Therefore to keep "growing" the consumer market, the standard of lifestyle, and wages has to be leveled at a mark somewhat higher than third world, but much lower than western standards. This is what is happening. We are being plowed into our new economic status. We are being thrust into a depression where the job market becomes so highly competitive that we will all agree to keep lowering our wages and benefits just to keep employed. The illegal alien market has been ALLOWED to continue unabated to keep "service" jobs at low low pay. Technical jobs are going to other countries where they have low low pay. Corporate profit has been enormous, and INDIVIDUAL profit high in the corporations has been enormous. Open your eyes people. The world is changing and you'd better recognize that you are not valuable as a "person" but only as a "CONSUMER" and a "COMMODITY". Places like China and India have more consumers/commodity. In a world economy, Americans, as we now exist, are no longer valuable.

So, the owner would have to have more than $250,000 in personal income to pay more in taxes under Obama's plan. That's a very good annual income, and I doubt that many small business owners come close to it.

In other words, just like in your private life when times are hard, I will get rid of the extras. In private life, if times are hard, one may sell their boat, jet ski, etc. All of the above, that I mentioned, are perks to working for us. They cost me extra right out of my pocket. It irritates me when someone says that the Democrats have been in control of Congress for the last two years. Republicans controlled the House and Senate until the newly elected members took control in late January of 2007. Also Bush, who never vetoed anything in the previous six years, suddenly started vetoing everything that crossed his desk. So to put the blame solely on the Democrats for the current economic collapses is short-sighted.

The Republican legislators must have been very impotent during their terms because they either did nothing to change the Democratic legislative agenda or were unable to change the laws that were in place to help prevent the calamity that has happened. I have done my own taxes my entire life & I know for a fact that higher tax brackets only affect additional money earned. The economy is in the toilet because Bush kept tax rates low for the rich & printed money to pay the bills, fueling inflation. Middle class people then had no money to buy anything. Any money saved thru lower taxes was a pittance compared to the loss in the value of our entire life savings through inflation, plus outright direct losses in our 401K accounts through the market tanking. Who's right? The Republicans have been right about this for a long time. It doesn't necessarily make them good spenders, but it does make them the best qualified to raise tax revenue.

The single biggest factor that fuels tax revenue is economic growth. When GDP is up, tax revenue goes up. In fact, it doesn't just go up...it explodes into the coffers of the IRS. That is the power of economic growth.

Obama believe he can grow the economy and impose higher taxes. He is mistaken. Spending fuels economic growth in the short-term and people can't spend as much if they are paying more in taxes. Investing fuels economic growth in the long-term and again, people can't invest as much if they have to pay more taxes.

As I recall from the info I saw President Elect O'Bama gave $3,000 or less per year to charities from 2000 thru 2004 while raking in a very substantial income during that time period. He did pick up the pace substantially beginning in 2005. I personally don't think he owes any of us an apology that he gave so little to charity during the earlier years since that is a personal decision. I would've given much more and in fact did on a lesser income during those years, but again that was his decision not mine.

It is clear you have not listened to Mr. Obama nor read his economic plan. His specifically stated that the increase would be only for the amount of profit over $250,000 and that the increase would be 3% (from 36% to 39%). His proposal would not place the amount under $250,000 in a higher bracket.

To all of your small-business owners who are threatening to close your businesses or fire your employees (including you Sam), why not tell us based on the figures I gave to Sam, what would be the real increase in your taxes based on your taxable profit? If you haven't figured that out yet, then how can you make a rational decision on whether to keep your doors open or whether to fire employees?

If you make irrational decisions about how to manage your business, what makes you think you'll survive the current economic crisis?

I am responding to your comment without reading the MANY comments that followed, so if I am repetitive, I am sorry.

Typically increased cost are passed on to the consumers. However, things are different right now. Retail prices are falling in many different areas, lowering gross margins. How can a retailer start raising prices when the trend is to lower them?

To offset increases in operating costs such as increased taxes during these times, you MUST reduce operating costs, which includes cost of labor.

The auto industry is an example. The unions have fought to get the best pay and benefits for their members. And I must say they have done an excellent job! The unions have well compensated members (and I'm sure the unions themselves are quite wealthy) with excellent benefits all they way through retirement. BUT, they may have priced themselves out of the market. If the auto makers are loosing money with each auto made, why continue to produce them? As people have said in this blog, close up shop. The workers that are worth the money they are paid, can find that kind of salary elsewhere. Now, the workers that were making that kind of money simply because they were members of the union, should be afraid. They will now be forced to work for wages that reflect their skills and abilities.

Many "foreign" car makers have non-union plants in the US that produce quality products much more efficiently than the "union" shops do. More power to them.

B. Hussein Obama is the worst thing that could have happened to this country is this critical time in regards to the economy and national security. By the way, the Democrats have been in control for two years and have been directly responsible for this financial crisis. Frank, Dodd, Schumer, Pelosi and Reid are licking their respective chops in anticipation of higher taxes and hog wild spending.
I will not be hiring anyone in the near future. What is the incentive to gain more revenue when the "merry men of Washington" will "redistribute" all of my L.L.C., gains? The media could care less about the health of our economy. Just as long as the propaganda machine is oiled all is well,comrade.

I do not see the problem with the Obama tax plan, I am simply going to make more money to pay the extra taxes and oboy I get to charge more on the 1st 250K.
