I have a sign at the door stating no soliciting. I don't think it should be banned. If you don't want to deal with it, put up a sign. Then if someone does knock, just tell them no. Usually people do not knock if they see a sign. The reason for my sign is I have small children and I don't want them opening the door to a stranger.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

During the depression people would come to our door askng for a sandwich. and most of the time(We never turned anybody down) they would try to do something in the yard in return. I was a bit shy and uncomfortable talking to strangers or groups so I figured forcing myself to try and convince complete strangers to buy a discount card for local golf courses and restaurants would help. It did and I'm a much more confident person now so I was glad for the experience. With that said, I ran across many homes where I could tell people were home but no one would answer the door. I cant blame them for doing so, especially in these times. Frakly, I appreciated it as it gave me to opportunity to move on to the next house; the law of averages is the foundation of sales.

So dont feel terrible if you dont answer the door and try not to waste the salesman's time as his time is just as important and it's his livelihood at stake. My favorite line when confronted at the door: "Sorry, you caught me at a bad time; I have to go now. Good Luck!" Be firm, but cheerful if possible.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

I actually paid for college doing door-to-door sales. I had to put up with all types of people who complained, yelled at me, and lied to me. I also had to work through wind, rain, and once got bitten in the leg by a crazy dog. But then there were the days when I was able to meet some really kind and generous people who were just as concerned as I was, and who were able to lend a hand, or a spare dollar or two if they had it. It gave me hope, in an increasingly cynical and apathetic world of people to see the few and far in between who were willing to open a door. And let someone in out of the rain. I sit everyday working at my computer with my door wide open with only a pet barricade (I also love my fresh air). I would not live in an area or a place that requires me to lock myself up in some stronghold away from life. You folks are one of the cause of this country becoming so twisted in our politics, our religious activities, and even our national identity. I only hope one day you become one of those 'citizens' that fall on hard times and find yourself needing to ask your neighbor for help or find yourself knocking on a stranger's door hoping for a little work to get you through. You turn your back on people so simply that one day you may find yourself without a neighbor who is willing to help you - or a neighbor refusing to "get involved" when your house catches fire. Your misguided and twisted mindset hasn't made your house a home - it has made it a prison.
I would suggest that it is not the fence that makes good neighbors, but the gate with a welcome sign that makes our homes a part of a neighborhood.
Fear is a sour thing - and the majority of the comments here seem to ooze with that sourness.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

I started my selling career selling door to door. It is one of the most effective ways at times to get out the message about a great product or service and also one of the best ways for a new salesperson to learn body language and the other rapport building skills one must possess. Yes, like anything, from a gun to a kitchen knife, it is something that when not used properly can result in problems, however I think the negative reaction many people have to it is not that it is so “bad” but because the people reacting so negatively are basically rather lazy.

If you don’t like someone knocking on your door; PUT UP A SIGN – rather than wasting your time getting all bent out of shape and making ridiculous gross generalizations about “no one should buy from ‘these people’”. Or perhaps, it is that you like to complain about things you could change if you took responsibility and did something about it? Anyone who is a professional who sees such a sign is not going waste their valuable time on you! I guarantee it. Door to door, in this day and age when only about 30 percent, if that, of people are actually home during the day anymore is not that efficient frankly – in terms of making contact.

Door to door selling is merely one of the many ways that one can “sell”. And what is selling? Simply the process of bringing to the attention of likely prospects a product or service that may benefit from. Our entire society is built on selling things; nothing happens, no one has a job until a salesman goes out there finds someone who needs the product and arranges for them to buy it. Most of the people bitching and complaining here wouldn’t have jobs if the truth be told if some poor salesman wasn’t out there taking rejection everyday selling the product that supports them in the style to which they have become accustomed. Behind every salesman there are secretaries, CEO’s, production people etc, etc, etc. ALL in the end relying on that salesman to make a sale to keep the pipeline and the product flowing out the doors – so they can live in their closed off, restricted communities that don’t allow “sales people”. Talk about short-sighted hypocrisy.

Now I know all those closed off – stay away from – types out there will say, “If I want something, I’ll go to a store.” In that case, you should not turn on the TV because you are going to get hit with a whole lot of “unsolicited” sales messages about things you hadn’t been thinking about.

The point is, if you don’t like something, then take the simple step needed to solve your problem. Don’t try to make the lives of others, whose source of income may depend on selling this way, difficult. Most communities already have solicitation ordinances that require those who wish to go door to door to apply for and pay for a permit; those permits state the hours that one can go door to door and have other guidelines/rule. They also usually require a background check if not fingerprinting as well.

Anyone who can pass this type of muster and who is coming to your door is probably someone who has a proper, legitimate offering; probably knows very well who can or cannot benefit from what they offer and is not someone to be treated badly just because you are in a bad mood and feel intruded upon. They are exercising their right of free speech. You, by the same token, have the right to put up a sign on your lawn saying “No Trespassing/No Soliciting”. So why don’t you do that - where’s the problem?
Do you open the door to salesmen?

we have had several lawn services knocking on our door. I realize this is probably one of the luxuries that many people eliminate from their budget when cutting expenses. I also realize these companies are struggling in this economy. However, if I want their services, I will contact them. They don't need to knock on my door. Put a flier in the door or a postcard in the mail to offer services. Don't knock on my door as I won't answer it.

I think the "No solicitations" sign is a great idea.

In today's world, it is too risky to open the door to strangers.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

My dog barks and the salesman backs away from the door slowly. I really enjoy sending my friends ‘Good Luck’ greetings, I think it is such a nice touch as it shows you are thinking of them and hope the very best for them. I started to find that paper greetings were getting more and more expensive which really wasn’t good! So I looked for an alternative, and found a really cool free Good Luck eCard site that I adore. There are so many cards to choose from so I have not become bored, and they always seem to be updating the site which is cool. There are quite a few sites out there, so it might be worth taking a browse around yourself, but I found this site really helpful.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

Do we open our door to strangers? Absolutely not; never have and never will.
Case in point: a lady in a near by upscale neighborhood got a knock at her door one evening around 21:00. Although she and her husband were expecting no one, she opened the door. Two gang members shot her to death.
Back in the depression of the 30's my great uncle Tom welcomed many a homeless person into his Pennsylvania home. He and his wife didn't have much themselves but fed and clothed many a 'brother who needed a dime.'
Unfortunately, these days it isn't even safe to aid a stranded motorist. Case it point: a young man was driving near the area where I used to work. He noticed that a car near him had a seat belt stuck in the passengers side door. At the next stop light he motioned for the driver to roll down his car window. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect.

But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible. It is easier to deal with a footpad than it is with the leech who wants "just a few minutes of your time, please -- this won't take long." Time is your total capital, and the minutes of your life are painfully few. If you allow yourself to fall into the vice of agreeing to such requests, they quickly snowball to the point where these parasites will use up 100 percent of your time -- and squawk for more!

So learn to say No -- and be rude about it when necessary.

Otherwise you will not have time to carry out your duty, or to do your own work, and certainly no time for love and happiness. The termites will nibble away your life and leave none of it for you.

(This rule does not mean that you must not do a favor for a friend, or even for a stranger. But let the choice be yours. Don't do it because it is "expected" of you.)"

Lazarus Long
madblogger@rocketmail.com
Do you open the door to salesmen?

I use to open my door for salespersons , not anymore , one of my experience is in NY before Christmas .A girl about 12 years old with his dad knock on my door and trying to sell me wrapping paper , I end up buying about $ 30 dollars worth of papers, also they told me they live around the neighborhood, believe me, never saw thier face again and even after Christmas I did not recieved my order, and in Las vegas is even worse , I can tell some of them looks like they have been taking illigal drugs, trying to sell magazine or house cleaning materials , she was showing me how good it clean my garrage using the cleaning material with her steel brush, look steel brush will the the work by just adding water . no way i am gonna open my door for sales people. I go further and won't meet w/ salespeople & insist on doing it by mail, phone. During my education as a mgr., years ago, a prof. told the class that salespeople run businesses. It shouldn't be that way, and it's no way to run a business because of the inherent conflict, but that was simply how a number of managers did run businesses. I suppose it's ok, if they are good salespeople, but they have been few & far between.

Do you open the door to salesmen?

I am a door to door salesman and work sometimes late into the evening. I represent a national phone company and sell a very fine product for home use and most of the time can save them money on their monthly home entertainment.
